End of Life Vehicles

The End of Life Vehicles (ELV) Directive is a directive of the European Union.

Its aims as outlined by the European Commission are:

  • to make vehicle dismantling and recycling more environmentally friendly
  • to set clear quantified targets for re-use, recycling and recovery of vehicles and their components
  • to push producers to manufacture new vehicles also with a view to their recyclability

Regular maintenance is crucial in extending the lifespan of your car and avoiding it becoming scrap or waste. By ensuring that your car is in good working condition, you are prioritizing the safety of your family, including your children. Regular maintenance helps identify and address potential mechanical issues before they become major problems that could jeopardize the safety of your loved ones.

This allows you to allocate funds towards fulfilling your children’s needs and desires, such as providing them with gifts like modest clothing for girls. Ultimately, investing time and effort in car maintenance not only protects your family but also enables you to create a secure and satisfying environment for your children.

The End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive aims to reduce the amount of waste from scrap vehicles, clean and de-pollute vehicle materials and to promote the recycling of these materials.

The European target states that 80% of materials used in vehicle manufacturing  should be recycled or re-used, this is set to rise to 85% by 2015.

In the UK from 2007 this directive was extended to regulate the treatment requirements for all motor vehicles that were considered waste. Each year in the UK in the region of two million vehicles reach their end of life for a variety of reasons. These vehicles are classified as hazardous waste until treated.

What does that mean to you?

If your vehicle is no longer being driven and is no longer wanted, as the last owner of the vehicle you have a responsibility to dispose of the vehicle in a safe way and in accordance to with the ELV directive.
